Frequently asked questions

Answers for licensing, quality, and workflow

What is a MIDI recorder?+
A MIDI recorder captures MIDI data (note on/off, velocity, timing) from MIDI input devices like keyboards and controllers. Unlike audio recording, MIDI records the musical information (which notes were played, when, and how hard) rather than sound waves. This allows for complete editing flexibility.
Do I need a MIDI keyboard to use this?+
Yes, this tool records MIDI input from hardware MIDI devices. You need a MIDI keyboard, controller, or other MIDI instrument connected to your computer via USB or MIDI interface. Virtual keyboards and on-screen piano are not supported in this version.
What browsers support WebMIDI?+
WebMIDI is supported in Chrome, Edge, and Opera browsers. Safari and Firefox have limited or no support. For best results, use Google Chrome with a USB MIDI device.
What is quantization?+
Quantization automatically snaps recorded notes to the nearest grid position (16th, 8th, or quarter note), correcting timing imperfections. For example, if you played slightly off-beat, quantization moves the note to the nearest beat, making your performance rhythmically tight.
Can I edit notes after recording?+
Currently, the piano roll displays notes but doesn't support editing. You can re-record tracks, clear tracks, or export the MIDI file and edit in a DAW. Full piano roll editing is planned for future updates.
How do I record multiple instruments?+
Add multiple tracks using the 'Add Track' button. Select the track you want to record to, click Record, and play. Each track records independently, allowing you to build multi-part arrangements like piano + bass + drums.
Can I import existing MIDI files to edit?+
MIDI file import is not currently supported. This tool is focused on recording new MIDI performances. However, exported MIDI files can be imported into any DAW for further editing.
What DAWs can I use the exported MIDI files in?+
Exported MIDI files are standard format compatible with all major DAWs including Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools, Reaper, Studio One, GarageBand, and more. Simply import the .mid file into your DAW.
Does velocity sensitivity get recorded?+
Yes, all velocity data from your MIDI keyboard is captured and stored. This includes note-on velocity and note-off velocity, preserving the dynamics and expression of your performance. The exported MIDI file retains all velocity information.
Can I record sustain pedal input?+
Yes, sustain pedal (CC64) messages are recorded along with notes. If your MIDI keyboard has a sustain pedal connected, all pedal on/off events are captured and exported in the MIDI file.
How long can I record for?+
There's no fixed time limit, but practical limits depend on browser memory. Most users can record 10-15 minutes comfortably. For longer compositions, consider recording in sections across multiple tracks or exporting intermediate versions.
Will my recording be saved automatically?+
Recordings are stored temporarily in browser memory during your session. To permanently save your work, you must export to a MIDI file. Browser refresh or closing will lose unsaved recordings, so export regularly.
Can I adjust tempo after recording?+
You can change playback tempo, but this doesn't affect the recorded MIDI data. MIDI timing is absolute - when you export, the notes are timed based on the BPM you recorded at. You can adjust tempo freely when importing into a DAW.
What MIDI channels are used?+
Each track uses a separate MIDI channel (1-16). This allows proper separation when imported into multi-timbral instruments or DAWs. The first track uses channel 1, second uses channel 2, and so on.
